이노우에 유이치는 서예가 Sokyu Ueda 밑에서 공부하지만 서예를 진짜 예술로 만들고자 전통을 깨고 1952년 Bokujin-kai를 설립한다. 그는 일찍부터 예술가로서 국제적인 인지도를 얻고 1956년 스위스의 Kunsthalle Basel에 참가하였다. 이듬해 영국 미술평론가 Herbert Read는 브라질 상파울루 비엔날레에서 이노우에의 작품을 극찬했다. 그의 작품은 카셀(독일)의 Documenta II와 뉴욕의 Carnegie International에서 높은 평가를 받고 있다. 독일 쾰른의 Gallery Rudolf Zwirner는 1962년과 1965년 두차례에 걸쳐 개인전을 개최하였다. 시행착오를 거쳐 탄생한 독창적인 수묵화 질감의 그의 한 글자 쓰기 스타일은 보편적이며 유혹적인 매력을 갖고 있다. 특히 그의 작품 “Poverty” 편지는 작가의 원칙을 여실히 보여주는 대표적인 작품이 된다. 이노우에는 자신의 예술 활동을 사업에 통합하는 것을 거부하고 평생 교육자로 일한다. 이노우에의 탄생 100주년을 기념하여 Kanazawa 21st Century Museum은 2015년 대규모 작가 회고전을 개최한 바 있다.
