AHHI CHOI: Inside vol.2

Whitestone Gallery Karuizawa is pleased to announce “Inside vol.2”, the solo exhibition by Ahh Choi. This is his second solo show in Karuizawa following “Inside” in 2018.
Ahhi Choi has just showed his new creative frontier under the COVID-19 by his latest solo show “Trigger” in Whitestone Ginza New Gallery in this February. Ahhi Choi was born in Hyogo Prefecture Japan in 1983. He gained recognition after showing in New York in 2014 and has since exhibited internationally including in the United States, France, Italy, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. The curvilinear movement in the work of Ahhi Choi is both buoyant and ecstatic, expressing innate sense of adventure the artist holds in his mind. Taking the flashes of inspiration that the artist experienced in day-to-day life he began to take ink to paper forming an abstract diary of his adventures. Letting his hand move organically across the page, Choi would interpret the silhouettes, pictures, words and letters from the well of his memory into energetic lines that are ubiquitous in throughout his work.
This exhibition will focus on circa 50 works created during 2015 and 2020.

ARTIST
작가 Ahhi Choi는 1983년 일본 효고현에서 태어났다. 작가의 작품 속 곡선의 움직임은 경쾌하면서도 황홀하여 작가가 지닌 타고난 모험심을 표현한다. 그는 2014년 뉴욕 전시를 시작으로 인지도를 높였으며 이후 미국, 프랑스, 이탈리아, 한국, 싱가포르, 홍콩 등 국제적으로 많은 전시를 한 바 있다. 그의 작품은 그의 잠재의식을 반영한 것으로 인식될 수 있다. 로스앤젤레스에서 공부한 후 그는 미국 서부를 여행하였고, 여행하며 데스 밸리, 그랜드 캐니언에서 옐로스톤에 이르는 광대한 국립공원 네트워크를 탐험하였다. 자연의 웅장함과 장엄함과 친밀한 유대감을 발전시킨 것은 이 미국 여행동안 이였다. 그가 고향인 고베로 돌아왔을 때 일본 도시의 비좁고 과밀한 생활방식은 작가에게 불안감과 향수를 느끼게 하였다. 일상생활에서 경험한 영감을 가지고 그는 자신의 모험에 대한 추상적인 일기를 형성하기 위해 종이에 잉크를 사용하기 시작했다. 종이 위를 유기적으로 손으로 움직이며 기억의 우물에서 얻은 실루엣, 그림, 단어, 글자들을 작품 곳곳에 있는 활기찬 선으로 해석하곤 했다. 그림 외에도 신발, 스케이트보드, 직물, 와인 라벨, 휴대전화 케이스, CD 커버, 심지어 악기(디저리두)의 디자인을 포함한 다른 예술 창작에도 광범위하게 참여했다. 2020년에는 아시야 신사에 그의 작품 “나카이마”(일본 신화에서 신의 시대를 계승한 현재라는 의미)를 헌정하고 신사와 공동으로 봉헌 사진을 제작하였다(200판은 즉시 매진). 2022년 에는 Barney’s New York 과 협업하여 티셔츠를 제작하는 등 많은 패션, 디자인 브랜드들과도 협업하고 있다.
