Whitestone Gallery Karuizawa is pleased to announce Ahhi Choi’s solo exhibition—Inside. Choi, who was passionate about skateboarding during his teenage years, produces unique abstract paintings that somehow enable us to feel graffiti art. The artist traces his deep impression to his paintings to what he felt from several phenomena, like from mother nature, and simply follows the inspiration he learned from skateboarding in terms of its free style. He also receives high praise as a shoe designer and displays his artistic talent in various fields. About twenty of his works are on view in this his first show in Karuizawa. We cordially invite you to this invaluable opportunity to enjoy the world of Ahhi Choi.

ARTIST

AHHI CHOI
Ahhi Choi was born in Hyogo Prefecture Japan in 1983. The curvilinear movement in the work of Ahhi Choi is both buoyant and ecstatic, expressing the innate sense of adventure the artist possesses. He gained recognition after showing in New York in 2014 and has since exhibited internationally including in the United States, France, Italy, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. Choi's work can be perceived as reflection of his subconscious mind. After studying in Los Angeles he traveled through the Western United States. During that trip, Choi explored the expansive network of National Parks, from Death Valley, the Grand Canyon to Yellowstone. It was during this stateside excursion that the artist developed an intimate bond with the grandeur and majesty of nature. Upon his return to his home city of Kobe, a malaise set in for Choi and it was the cramped and overcrowded lifestyle of urban Japan that was causing him to feel nostalgic. Taking the flashes of inspiration that the artist experienced in day-to-day life he began to take ink to paper forming an abstract diary of his adventures. Letting his hand move organically across the page, Choi would interpret the silhouettes, pictures, words and letters from the well of his memory into energetic lines that are ubiquitous in throughout his work. In addition to painting, the artist has also extensively engaged in other artistic creations, including the design of shoes, skateboards, fabrics, wine labels, cell phone cases, CD covers, and even musical instruments (didgeridoo). In 2020, dedicated his work "Naka-ima" (meaning "present time as a succession of the age of God, in Japanese mythology) to Ashiya Shrine and created votive pictures in collaboration with the shrine (sold out 200 editions immediately). He started also the creation of hanging scrolls in collaboration with a long-established Kyoto-style mounting brand "Kanouunkindou".
