KAZUHARU HANADA
Born in Sapporo, Kazuharu Hanada enrolled in the Department of Oil Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1965, where he had the opportunity to learn from artist Ryohei Koiso. Hanada completed his postgraduate studies there in 1971, during which he showcased his creative range by experimenting with various contemporary art forms. His works from this period reflect the evolution of abstract landscape painting, encompassing pre-war styles like Fauvism, Cub- ism and Surrealism, and Post-war Abstract Expressionism. His works, such as Row of Popular Trees (1961-1964) and Untitled (1969), demonstrated his progressive approach to the genre.
In 1974, Hanada returned to Sapporo and became a prominent member of the avant-garde movement in Hokkaido. Hanada fully developed his unique artistic voice in the mid- 1980s, transitioning from an artistic style characterized as abstract, which featured sharply defined planes of colour reminiscent of renowned artist Ellsworth Kelly and other contemporaries. During this period, he infused his abstract works with a sense of playfulness and warmth, which be- came his unique style's hallmarks. Hanada primarily exhibited his works in solo and group exhibitions, opting not to join public associations until his passing in 2017.
