GUTAI DICTIONARY

Back to Index

Akan (Oh, no. , Slang from Kansai region )

When Gutai members finished their works , they brought those to Jiro Yoshihara's home for evaluation.
Yoshihara's evaluation was simple: good or bad, "yes" or "no”. He did not say why it was bad, but simply stated that anything that was bad was "bad.
In an interview, Maekawa said, "I was very surprised. I don't think there was any other group that was so strict. Only the quality of the work is questioned here. In a normal group, if you have been doing it for a long time, you are evaluated accordingly, but in Gutai, it does not matter whether you are a veteran or a newcomer, you are judged solely on the basis of your work. Members are always thinking about how they can create something unique, something that has never been done before, something that is highly expressive."
