GUTAI DICTIONARY
Back to IndexArt Informel
An art movement of abstract painting that emerged in Europe in the 1950s after World War II, producing works that were literally unformed “Informel” in French. This style corresponded to Abstract Expressionism in the United States and became the mainstream of art at that time. This was an art movement that occurred simultaneously around the world, and it was the revival of avant-garde art that had been interrupted by the war, as well as the beginning of contemporary art.
Although Gutai's activities were linked to these trends, they were unique and highly original. However, critics at the time considered Gutai as an imitation of Western art and did not give it a fair evaluation.
