Bell (Atsuko Tanaka)

Atsuko Tanaka presented this work at the first Gutai Art Exhibition in 1955.
When the viewer presses the button on the switch after reading the instructions on the card that says, "Feel free to turn on the switch, Atsuko Tanaka," many metal bells connected to the card ring in sequence. The sound follows the location of the bells, and by ringing them in sequence, a very sophisticated form of expression is created, in which the distance between the sound which appeals to the auditory sense, and the visual sense is expressed. The bells are placed at intervals of 2 meters, and 20 bells are connected, and a circuit is created so that they ring in order. This work inspired the image of cords and wiring, which became an important element in Tanaka's later works.
