Gutai Card Box

The creation of New Year's cards made the creation of postcard-sized works of art popular among the members. A vending machine, the Gutai Card Box, was created as a way to disseminate artwork not only among members but also to the general public, and was installed at the 11th Gutai Art Exhibition held at the Namba Takashimaya Department Store in Osaka in 1962. Although it was in the form of a vending machine, it was not a mechanical device, but a person entered the box and handed the work to the purchaser. It was not just for sales, but also the creation of a new exhibition method that had been tried many times in the past, and a place for direct communication between the artist and the audience.
