Symbols (Shuji Mukai)

Unlike other Gutai artists, Shuji Mukai, who joined the Gutai group as a second generation member, did not use distinctive materials or create new drawing methods, but rather worked with a completely different methodology. His style was to fill every object with his own unique symbols. This style evolved, filling entire rooms with symbols, and eventually proliferated to buildings, creating a new field of art as environmental artworks.
In a happening filled with symbols at the modern jazz cafe "Check" in Osaka by Mukai, symbols were drawn on everything that existed, and the categories of painting and sculpture were no longer meaningful.
