Kazuo Shiraga, widely regarded as the pioneer of Japanese action painting, is internationally acclaimed as a prominent figure of the Gutai group. Shiraga executes his paintings through gestural movements by painting with his feet suspended from a rope, producing bold and vibrant compositions marked by intense physicality and immediacy. Before participating in Gutai in 1955, Shiraga was already an active member of the 'Zero Society' group alongside Atsuko Tanaka, Akira Kanayama, and Saburo Murakami. French art critic Michel Tapié, the creator of the Art Informel manifesto, highly praised Shiraga's spellbinding talent. Eventually, Shiraga entered Buddhist priesthood at the Enryakuji-Temple (Hieizan Mountain) and received his Buddhist name Sodo Shiraga which he continued to paint under. In 1993, Shiraga participated in the Venice Biennial, and his work continues to fascinate art collectors worldwide.
