PROFILE

TENMYOUYA HISASHI
TENMYOUYA HISASHI

Hisashi Tenmyouya, a Japanese contemporary artist, actively employs a unique Japanese painting style called ‘Neo-Nihonga’, transforming traditional Japanese paintings into contemporary art. Through his style, Tenmyouya portrays traditional Japanese motifs like bike gangs and tattoos using modern materials such as acrylic paints and tracing paper.

In 2010, Tenmyouya introduced the concept of ‘BASARA’, an art concept characterised by extravagance and uniqueness, which gained recognition and popularity in Japan. Furthermore, his ‘Meta-Nihonga’ paintings from the 2022 CORE abstract series vividly convey the impact of the pandemic and societal turmoil through their lines and colours.

Various renowned public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (Houston, USA), Chazen Museum of Art (Madison, USA), Art Gallery of South Australia (Adelaide, Australia) and Takamatsu City Museum of Art (Takamatsu, Japan), have acquired Tenmyouya’s artworks.
