TSUYOSHI MAEKAWA

“Gutai art does not falsify the material. In Gutai art, the human spirit and the material reach out their hands to each other”
―Jiro Yoshihara “The Gutai Manifest” (1956)
Whitestone Ginza Main Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Tsuyoshi MAEKAWA.
MAEKAWA is one of the representative figures of the worldwide evaluated avant-garde art group, Gutai Art Association. In recent years, authoritative museums like Tate Modern (London) and Chicago Museum have collected his works consecutively―this provides evidence that MAEKAWA occupies an important position in the context of contemporary art history.
MAEKAWA still has been a powerful embodiment of Gutai spirit even more than half a century later from the Gutai Manifest. The artist who pursues an unprecedented approach to the material and the material which praises their lives autonomously; these two components come to fruition as one work emitting energy at the same level and balancing in the exquisite design beyond the intention of the artist.
When it comes to MAEKAWA, “dongoros” (burlaps) is immediately imagined. His unparalleled creative style that releases the materials on their own will never lose its luster beyond the passage of time.
This exhibition will have an overhead view of the art of MAEKAWA from various perspectives: to say nothing of recent huge scale productions, circa 50 works including chic colored stitched canvases from the 1980s and valuable sculptural pieces from the 1990s will be displayed.
It will be our great pleasure if this exhibition would provide a perfect opportunity for visitors to feel a shower of the tremendous energy of MAEKAWA.
