Burlap Bag (Tsuyoshi Maekawa)

Tsuyoshi Maekawa continued to faithfully reflect the ideas about materials that Jiro Yoshihara commented on in his Gutai Art Manifesto in his works. Maekawa used scraps of linen from the burlap bag factory near his home at the time for his works. The rough texture of the burlap and the semi-dimensional nature of the canvas that seems to pop out of the screen are the characteristics of Maekawa's work, and have produced many attractive works. In Maekawa's studio, there is a sewing machine, and the fabric is not just a base (support) to be covered with paint, but asserts its uniqueness. A new style of work is being created every day, making use of the characteristics of the material itself.
