Gutai Pinakoteka

In 1962, the original Gutai exhibition facility opened in three storehouses owned by Jiro Yoshihara in Nakanoshima, Osaka, which had been remodeled. Tapié named it after "Pinacoteca," a word meaning a painting studio or gallery in the Italian Renaissance era. The Gutai office was also moved here. Exhibitions of foreign artists were also held here, making it a valuable facility in Osaka, where there was no place to introduce contemporary art from overseas at the time. Many famous foreign artists and critics who came to Japan also visited this place, making it function like a cultural embassy.
