SENKO TAKAHASHI: The Frontier of Edge
Ginza New Gallery
2023.09.01 - 09.23
Many people must overlay an image of “the skirt lifted up by the wind” with that of Marylin Monroe’s famous scene from The Seven Year Itch. The solid image of “pure white dress flew up by the upwind from passing subway train”. On the contrary, there is neither cinematic shot of “a posed look” nor “apparent switching of vivid colors” in the visual world of Senko Takahashi: natural expression on the face that reminds us of “a person on the street” and lyrical dance of pastel colors are melted into fluid marble patterns without any distinctive edge of perspective. Instead of assertive consciousness like a cinematographic full shot, various elements continue to float blurring edges as well as receiving even the viewer’s sensation in the same straight line. Left only with timeless feeling of freedom and lightness.
“Edge” is the key concept that Senko Takahashi will insert into the genre of contemporary Bijinga (the portrait of a beautiful woman). In the current situation, in which any criteria for beauty are diversified, the idea of counterpoint itself has been invalidated. Relations such as balance/unbalance, parts/whole, line/plane, two-/three dimensions, conscious/unconscious, intuition/logic, western sense of hierarchy/eastern multiple viewpoints, aesthetics of addition/subtraction, etc.-are two sides of the same coin and “partners in crime” eroding and melting each other. In the field of contemporary art, in which newness is always pursued, where is the edge of the frontier for Bijinga? His creative attitude itself will be an incessant update of “edges”.
Playfulness of beauty scooped up by his exceptional sensibility and extemporaneously graceful consistency in the circumstance of “anything goes!” global society-Senko Takahashi shows us utmost its perilous balance of prescription supported by his long-year artistic career. We cordially invite you to come visit this precious opportunity.
